Hello! My name is Annie Jarman (she/her) and I am a political science PhD candidate at Washington University in St. Louis. I research gender politics using advanced computational methodology.
I am on the job market in AY 2025-2026.

My dissertation research advances our understanding of women’s underrepresentation in three ways. First, it links theory to methods by introducing a cutting-edge, replicable model to distinguish between general and gendered hostility toward politicians. Second, it uses the computational model to illustrate that women politicians still encounter higher costs associated with their political careers due to gender bias among the public. Third, it demonstrates that the gendered costs of officeholding influence how women enter and exit political careers.
My secondary research shifts focus from understanding the effects of online hostility to developing solutions. This research examines the perpetrators of and public tolerance for online abuse toward politicians, then uses this information to design interventions to mitigate hostility.
My scholarship collectively contributes to the fields of gender politics, political ambition, political behavior, political communication, and computational social science.
